The symposium on weather and climate extremes organised by the Indian Meteorological Society in collaboration with Panjab University (PU) and Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) concluded on Wednesday.
SASE director Ashwagosha Ganju said, "Over 400 eminent scholars, operational meteorologists, researchers, planners, hydrologists, agriculturists, disaster managers, instrumentation scientists and technology developers presented their research findings in this symposium in the last four days."
Several themes including climate change, forecasting weather extremes, sectoral impacts of climate change and climate extremes were discussed during the event.
Over 108 research papers were presented. Nine plenary talks, 54 invited talks, 87 poster presentations and several industry presentations were made. Participants from all over India and abroad had contributed to the discussion.
Several issues including the need for a department of earth sciences to be set up in each university for teaching and research and the relevance of PU leading the way with department of geography as the nodal centre to bring educationists and end users together were discussed.
The students are expected to find employment opportunities with several government organisations including India Meteorological Department, Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
The symposium highlighted the need to make climate change studies more interdisciplinary in nature, incorporating the views of geographers, sociologists, economists, anthropologists, chemists and other stakeholders. The effort to initiate a department of earth sciences at PU with the department of geography as the nodal center is a step in the direction.
