Adding political undertones to Sunday's clash between police and farmers in a Rewari district village of Haryana, Indian National Lok Dal secretary-general Ajay Singh Chautala on Monday demanded the government not to go ahead with land acquisition in the district and withdraw all cases registered against farmers following the clash.
The farmers had on Monday blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway at Ahalwas village in Rewari district to oppose land being acquired in the area by the state government. Terming the land acquisition policy of the state government as "faulty", Chautala said farmers should not be deprived of their agriculture land against their wishes.
The INLD leader criticised yesterday's police action, which led to the clash between farmers and policemen.
"It has become the policy of the Hooda government to force farmers to part with their land against their wishes. Force is used at the slightest pretext against innocent citizens," he said.
He alleged that the chief minister had promised the farmers of Rewari district that their lands would not be acquired. "He, however, has backtracked from his previous statement," Chautala added.
The INLD leader said the government was insensitive and was ignoring the pleas of farmers all over the state. "In Gorakhpur village of Fatehabad district, the government was bent upon establishing a nuclear power plant and ignoring the safety concerns of the locals," he said.
