The three-day workshop on 'Cancer registration and cancer control' concluded on Saturday at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
Dr Puneet Dhillon explained and gave number of examples for calculation of cancer incidence, prevalence, deaths and direct standardisation of cancer incidence rates.
It was followed by Dr Freddie Bray, deputy head for cancer information section, IARC, France, explained the basics of indirect standardisation of rates and gave hands on experience on some exercises on standardisation.
Dr R Dikshit, associate professor, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai explained the basic concepts and use of cancer registry in epidemiological research and had a discussion with the participants regarding the practical problems faced by them and provided solution for the same.
The scientific session ended with the presentation by Dr C Stefen, Stellenbosch University, South Africa on how to prepare the reports from cancer registries.
Post workshop evaluation was done using a two paged questionnaire in which 92% of the participants scored more than 70% score and 31% of the participants scored 100% marks.
Dr Rajesh Kumar, head of public health school and Dr JS Thakur, additional professor, department of community medicine, PGIMER were the chair persons for the scientific session on 'Statistical methods for cancer registry'.

The workshop ended with a vote of thanks which was given by Dr Ravneet Kaur, assistant professor, community medicine, school of public health, PGIMER, Chandigarh.
