After losing control of the vehicle, the Scorpio driver hit the divider, flew to the opposite lane and crashed into the oncoming car.

The deceased, Vijay Gehlot, 40, was from Chembur and was alone in his Zen car, the police said. The Scorpio driver, Bablu Subhaga Yadav, 28, was accompanied by his sick daughter and wife – all of them escaped unhurt, the Govandi police said.

The police suspect that Yadav was driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Gehlot was employed with a transport company and was heading to Koparkhairane in Navi Mumbai for work when the accident occurred.” said Uttam Kolekar, senior police inspector, Govandi police station.

Yadav, a resident of Annabhau Sathenagar in Mankhurd, was taking his sick daughter to a nearby hospital.

The crash impact was such that it took a while for rescuers to extricate Gehlot from the badly-mangled car. By the time he was rescued, it was too late as doctors declared him dead on arrival. The fire-brigade has to use gas cutters to extricate him. “Gehlot’s legs were trapped and he sustained grievous head injuries,” said Kolekar.

The accused has been booked under section 304 (part II) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
