Pune traffic department has tied up with the director of technical education, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), to begin a series of traffic classes, offering credits at the end of the course, to students.
Police inspector Rajesh Puranik, who began the counselling unit at the city traffic branch earlier this year, says, “This is to counsel petty traffic offenders - those riding without a helmet or driving without wearing a seat belt. The idea is to create awareness to follow traffic rules for safety.”
Currently, no-helmet offences are being recorded on CCTVs and via the Satark Punekar app.
Hence, this traffic counselling unit is shifting the paradigm to focus on youth and students.
“We have tied up with 197 colleges in Pune district and will reach 3.5 lakh students in the first phase. We have already visited 12 colleges,” says Puranik, himself a diploma holder in Criminology and Cyberlaws.
He has also initiated road safety training for students under the NSS (National Service Scheme) and NCC (National Cadet Corps) schemes.
NSS and NCC students will be trained to assist police in various traffic and crowd activities, apart from being called on to man chowks and streets adjoining colleges.
