8 schools get bomb threats, later declared hoax in UT

The email circulated to the institutions claimed that explosives would be detonated on school premises around 1 pm. The message also contained references to an explosive to be detonated in Haryana chief minister’s office at 3 pm.

Eight schools – seven in Chandigarh and one in Mohali – received bomb threat emails on Thursday, prompting an emergency evacuation of students and staff.

The email circulated to the institutions claimed that explosives would be detonated on school premises around 1 pm. The message also contained references to an explosive to be detonated in Haryana chief minister’s office at 3 pm.

Among the schools to receive the threat mails were Sacred Heart School, St John’s School, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sant Kabir School – all in Sector 26, Chitkara International School, Sector 25, St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, Delhi Public School, Sector 40, Chandigarh, and Strawberry Fields High School, New Chandigarh.

Immediately after the alerts, police teams, along with a bomb disposal and dog squad, rushed to the campuses and carried out searches. Strawberry Fields principal Nisha Kaul said, “Upon receiving the threat mail, the school authorities promptly evacuated the premises and conducted a thorough inspection. After the bomb squad completed its checks and gave an all-clear signal, classes resumed.”
