The Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has placed an order to procure 500 new mattresses for Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH) here, days after the controversy involving the varsity vice-chancellor Dr Raj Bahadur being made to lie on a dirty patient’s bed by Punjab health minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra, leading to the V-C’s resignation.

The issue of dirty mattresses at the medical college was raised by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and various social organizations, accusing the BFUHS of not procuring them.

Rohit Chopra, incharge of procurement BFUHS, said the medical university has placed an order for 500 mattresses and the stock was expected to be delivered within 30 days. The company has assured partial delivery of 100 mattresses by August 15.

Meanwhile, the health minister sent 200 new mattresses as a personal donation to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH) at Faridkot on Monday, where the V-C was made to lie on a “damaged and dirty” mattress in the hospital’s skin department during an inspection by the minister.

“The GGSMCH authorities sent a demand for 400 mattresses in April this year. Later in June, the university advertised for procurement and a technical evaluation for tender was held on July 13. The samples were checked on July 27 and approved,” Chopra said.
