Bathinda unit collapse: Body of trapped worker retrieved

The body of a worker, who was trapped after a cold storage unit collapsed in Bathinda’s Bhagta Bhai Ka village on Wednesday afternoon, was retrieved around midnight.

The deceased, Sohan Singh, who was in the mid 40s, was a resident of Rai Khana village in Bathinda.

Deputy commissioner Rajesh Dhiman said a cylinder blast appeared to have triggered the collapse. “A team from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) swiftly rescued two workers soon after the incident was reported. A detailed probe will ascertain the cause of the mishap once the rescue operation concludes,” he added.

Teams of the fire brigade were also engaged after an ammonia leak was reported.

The cold storage facility was being used to stock potatoes grown in the Rampura Phul area. The unit is owned by a business family from Bhagta Bhai Ka.
