‘Body-blow to Centre’: Congress’ Surjewala on National Herald case dismissal

Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh on Friday, Member of Parliament and AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala launched a scathing attack on the BJP government following the legal relief granted to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.

On Tuesday, a special Delhi court rejected the ED’s prosecution complaint, a move Surjewala described as the “decimation of the politics of revenge like a pack of cards.”

He asserted that the National Herald remains an unsuppressable symbol of India’s freedom movement. He characterised the ED’s actions as “politically motivated malice” intended to intimidate Congress leadership rather than uphold the law.

Highlighting the case’s history, he noted that the CBI had declined to register an FIR as far back as 2014 due to jurisdictional limitations. Accusing ED of being a “puppet” of the Centre, Surjewala said the court’s rejection serves as a significant “body-blow” to the weaponisation of investigative agencies.
