A 27-year-old woman, wife of a Chandigarh Police sub-inspector (SI), has been arrested in connection with a road accident in Mauli Jagran on August 31 that claimed the life of a 62-year-old cyclist and injured a motorcyclist. Identified as Sapna Bhardwaj, a resident of Sector 17, Panchkula, the accused was later released on bail, officials said.

The accident took place near Sant Nirankari Bhawan in Mauli Jagran when the car first hit a motorcyclist, Dimple Kumar, from behind before hitting Ram Shankar, who was riding a bicycle, police said. Shankar, 62, a resident of Mauli Jagran and a retired Chandigarh Municipal Corporation employee, sustained severe injuries. He died on Wednesday. Dimple, a resident of Pipli Wala Town, Manimajra, was on his way to work when the accident occurred. He also sustained injuries.
Police have seized her car. The investigating officer said she had all the required driving-related documents. An FIR under Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 125A (act endangering human life or personal safety of others) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against her.
