A landmark exhibition titled “Chandigarh’s Indian Modernists” was inaugurated on Saturday at the government museum & art gallery as part of the celebrations marking 75 Years of the Idea of Chandigarh. The exhibition was formally opened by V. P. Malik, former chief of Army staff.
The exhibition highlights the contributions of Indian architects, engineers, administrators and cultural practitioners who shaped the city’s modernist identity. Featuring drawings, sketches, photographs, paintings, archival material, furniture and writings it is organised by the Chandigarh citizens foundation (CCF) . The concept was initiated by CCF focus group convenor Deepika Gandhi, curated by prof. Vikramaditya Prakash and Eashan Chaufla, the exhibition underscores the role of interdisciplinary innovation in shaping the city’s built and cultural landscape.
Addressing the gathering, General Malik emphasised the importance of preserving institutional memory and recognising Indian contributions to Chandigarh’s development. The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with INTACH, Panjab digital library, MN Sharma architectural society, Panjab University architects office, PGIMER department of clinical photography, and the government museum & art gallery. It will remain open to the public until March 29.
