Former Haryana minister Sampat Singh on Wednesday demanded an immediate assessment of crop damage and compensation to the tune of ₹50,000 per acre for crop losses.
In a statement, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader said that Tuesday’s rain, hailstorm, and strong winds caused severe damage in villages across Nalwa, Adampur, and Barwala assembly constituencies of Hisar district, as well as in other parts of the state. “I visited several villages – Shahpur, Nyoli Kalan, and Kirtan to assess the damage and met farmers who were worried as their wheat, mustard, and gram crops have been damaged,’’ he said.
Singh said that during the previous Kharif season, thousands of acres of farmland was affected due to breach in drains and canals, leading to waterlogging. “This time, there was an excellent yield of wheat, mustard, and gram, and farmers had pinned their hopes on this harvest to ease their household expenses. However, the hailstorm and storm have dashed those hopes,” the INLD leader said, adding that the extent of the damage will become even more apparent once the sun comes out.
