Cyclist robbed at knifepoint in Chandigarh

According to the complaint, one of the suspects caught him from the back while the other, armed with a knife, threatened him for money

A 48-year-old scrap dealer was attacked and robbed at knifepoint near the road dividing Sector 54/55 on Tuesday night while he was returning home on his bicycle.

The victim, Hauri, a resident of Palsora village, told the police that the incident occurred around 8.45 pm, about 300-400 metres ahead of the Phase-2 lights in Sector 55. He was returning home, after selling scrap in Madanpura, Mohali, when two youths emerged from the forest area and blocked his way.

According to the complaint, one of the suspects caught him from the back while the other, armed with a knife, threatened him for money. The assailant’s accomplice allegedly snatched Hauri’s wallet from his back pocket and fled towards the forest.

The youngster with the knife also tried to escape but stumbled, fell, and suffered a head injury. Hauri tried to catch the suspect but was allegedly attacked with stones by the accomplice. Passersby gathered at the spot and helped the victim restrain the accused. Meanwhile, Hauri informed his sons Akash and Shubham, who rushed to the spot. During the scuffle, the accused allegedly attacked Shubham with the knife, causing an injury to his hand but locals later overpowered the suspect. The victim said his wallet contained 2,000 cash and some documents.
