An ex-serviceman allegedly shot his 23-year-old grandson in Lohara panchayat of Balh area in Mandi district on Sunday night, police said.

The victim has been identified as Umesh, 23. The accused has been identified as Bahadur Singh, his grandfather, a retired army personnel. He was drunk at the time of crime and has a history of abusing family members under the influence.

The incident happened after the accused got into an argument with his grandson over some issue. The dispute escalated and the accused, in a fit of rage, fired at his grandson with his licensed gun.

Locals immediately reached the scene and the injured was taken to Nerchowk Medical College for treatment. He was later rushed to PGIMER in Chandigarh and is said to be in critical condition.

Upon receiving information, police reached the spot and collected evidence. Mandi superintendent of police Vinod Kumar visited the scene. A case has been registered and investigation is underway, police added.
