Many former sarpanches, panches and their supporters, including some Congressmen, from several Chandigarh villages joined the BJP in the presence of Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat at the party office in Sector 33 on Saturday.
State president Arun Sood said, “The new members will strengthen the party in Chandigarh.” Shekhawat said the new members will be a participant in the politics of change. Reacting to Congress workers joining the opposition, Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky said, “They are the same people who used to speak against the BJP during the farmers’ movement, but have changed their tone. These people were not performing while being in the Congress and now, they will not do anything in the BJP either.”
Convocation ceremony held at GGDSD College
Chandigarh As many as 1,450 students of the 2020-21 batch were awarded degrees at the 45th convocation ceremony of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma (GGDSD) College, Sector 32, on Saturday. Supreme Court Justice Rajesh Bindal, an alumnus of the college, was the chief guest at the ceremony, which also commemorated the college’s 50 years. College principal Ajay Sharma congratulated the students and highlighted the achievements of the college.

Chandigarh SGGS Hockey Club-26 teams in men’s and women’s championships won their respective matches during the Chandigarh State Hockey Championships at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium on Saturday. In the men’s tie, SGGS Club beat Rock Rovers Club 3-1. The women’s team defeated PU Hockey Club 3-0.
Man nabbed for stealing iron
Mohali The Balongi police have nabbed a thief and recovered 5,000 kg stolen iron, including plates, pipes, grilles and clumps, from him. The accused has been identified as Sukhwant Singh, 40, a resident of Sohana. He was produced before the court and taken on three-day police remand. Balongi SHO Parivinkal Singh Grewal said the accused was nabbed from Balongi after a tip-off on Friday. The accused was carrying the stolen articles in a pick-up truck to sell them. During the preliminary investigation, the accused said he stole from under-construction houses in the Jhampur area. A case was registered under Section 380 (theft in any building, tent or vessel) and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code.
Blood donation camp held to mark National Maritime Week
Chandigarh Over 40 units of blood were collected in a blood donation camp organised by the Merchant Navy Officers’ Association (MNOA), Stepping Stones School, Sector 38-A, and Bharat Vikas Parishad on Saturday “The camp was organised to mark the National Maritime Day on April 5. It is an annual event, which we organise as a part of our social responsibility to give back to the society,” said MNOA president Captain Tejinder Singh Bhatia. A team of doctors, nurses and paramedics from Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, conducted the camp.
Two-day seminar organised by PU law dept
Chandigarh The department of laws, Panjab University, and Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana organised a two-day seminar on “Completion of 50 years of basic structure doctrine: The way ahead” on March 31 and April 1. Supreme Court Justice Rajesh Bindal was the chief guest. The seminar was divided into two parts, including technical sessions and panel discussions. Over 250 academicians, research scholars and students of law presented papers at the seminar.
One-day workshop held at PGIMER
Chandigarh A one-day workshop on child abuse and protection was organised by PGIMER’s department of psychiatry on Saturday. It was inaugurated by director Dr Vivek Lal. Debasish Basu, department head, Vipin Kaushal, medical superintendent, and other former faculty members of the institute were also present during the workshop. Shekhar Sheshadri, former head of department, NIMHANS, emphasised on the importance of knowing about child abuse and its implications on children and families as a whole. Approximately 200 delegates registered for the workshop.
Two-day awareness event held to mark World Autism Day
Mohali A two-day “International conference on autism and neurodiversity” is being organised at Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences to mark the World Autism Day. The conference aimed to raise awareness about the autism spectrum disorder, appraise people about autism at the grassroots level. The conference will culminate on Sunday, where various renowned speakers will throw light on the different aspects of autism. The district administration also illuminated its buildings and complexes with blue lights on the intervening night of April 1 and 2 to make people aware about autism. The administration is also organising special programmes in association with organisations registered under the National Trust Act.
