The outgoing fiscal saw MC exceeding its revenue target of ₹160 crore, collecting approximately ₹165 crore.
A key development was the approval to increase the property tax target to ₹55 crore for the upcoming year, after surpassing the ₹41-crore target in the current year.
Property tax, along with water supply charges, is among the major revenue sources for MC.
Parminder Pal Singh, the MC commissioner, said the civic body was aiming to generate over ₹70 crore by conducting a detailed property survey. Using the Government of India’s “e-Naksha” scheme, drone images will map the area, allowing teams to visit properties to check the property area and number of tenants. Commercial activities underway in residential areas will also be examined for accurate property tax assessments, he added.
Meanwhile, MC also expects to rake in ₹27.5-crore revenue from advertisement fees.
After multiple failed attempts to award a ₹31-crore advertisement tender, MC allotted tenders worth ₹27.5 crore to a Delhi-based company. This deal, covering 287 sites across the city for billboards, gantries, unipoles and toilet blocks, will boost MC’s annual revenue from advertisements from ₹10 crore to ₹28 crore.
Apart from its biggest revenue source— ₹100 crore from Punjab municipal funds, MC also hopes to generate ₹10 crore from electricity tax, ₹4.5 crore from excise duty, ₹1.5 crore from rent agreements and ₹5.8 crore from water tax, among others, to achieve its revenue target.
However, MC has not received any electricity tax from the Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) despite multiple reminders, Mohali mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu confirmed.
On the development front, MC has allocated ₹129 crore to enhance infrastructure and civic services in the city while maintaining financial stability.
MC to go paperless
Meanwhile, MC House requested the MC commissioner to control the stationery expenses, which have been increasing annually. This time , MC has set aside ₹12 lakh for stationery.
To address this, the commissioner announced that starting April 1, MC will go totally paperless and all work will be conducted through e-office. “I won’t approve any paper file now and only e-files will be approved, which will reduce the stationery cost,” he said.
