After bidders shortlisted to get the tender for sterilisation of dogs failed to meet the required criterion, the municipal corporation(MC) has recalled the tenders.
An MC official, who did not wish to be named, said, “We could not give the contract to any of the shortlisted bidders as they did not have the requisite documents. We have once again recalled the tenders, which will remain open till mid-December, following which new bidders will be shortlisted and tenders will be allotted on priority.”
The stray dog menace has been centre stage in the district with at least 7,000 dog-bites reported this year alone. As many as 8,032 cases were reported in 2021, 5,004 in 2020 and 8,313 in 2019.
Animal husbandry dept steps in
The civic body has also sought help from the animal husbandry department to curb the canine conundrum. “The MC officials recently held a meeting with officials of the animal husbandry department and sought their help in treating dogs that habitually bite people. The department also sterilises the dogs that are taken for treatment. Once our tenders are finalised, the selected private player will take up dog sterilisation in the city,” a senior officer said.
On November 8, high drama was seen at Punchum Society in Sector 68, Mohali, after 50 maids went on an indefinite strike over dog bite cases within the society. Over 30 persons, including pregnant women, had fallen prey to dog bites in the society in three months
Municipal councillors had also raised concerns over the increasing canine menace at a recent house meeting. MC commissioner Navjot Kaur said, “ The sterilisation process would start soon after tender allotment. We are dealing with the issue on priority.”
