A 33-year-old man has been arrested from Kalka for carrying an illegal country-made pistol and a live cartridge, police said on Monday. The accused, identified as Nikhil Chaurasia of Kalka, is already facing two cases related to assault.

Assistant commissioner of police (crime) Arvind Kamboj said a police team received information that Chaurasia was waiting for someone on the road connecting Tipra bypass and Green Valley Ghatiwala while carrying an illegal firearm. Acting on the tip-off, the police apprehended the accused and seized the pistol, along with a live cartridge. Chaurasia failed to produce any licence or permit for the weapon, police said. Officials said they are trying to arrest the person who supplied the firearm to him.
An FIR was registered against him at Kalka police station under Section 25(1B)(A) of the Arms Act. He was produced before a court that sent him to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway, officials added.
