The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) on Wednesday directed UT officers to make residents aware of their human rights during a conference held in the office of the PSHRC to raise awareness about the safeguards available for the protection of human rights.
During the conference, all departments were instructed to make efforts to educate the public that, as per the Gazette notification of the Union of India dated August 5, 2021, PSHRC has been conferred the functions of handling matters related to the UT.
It was emphasised that citizens can easily approach the commission for the enforcement of their rights as it is located in Chandigarh. Moreover, no legal fee or requirement of a lawyer is needed to approach the commission. Complainant can submit a simple handwritten or email complaint regarding the violation of his/her human rights.
Apart from this, various other matters were discussed to ensure smooth cooperation and functioning between the PSHRC and the Chandigarh administration.
The conference, chaired by PSHRC members justice Sant Parkash and co-chaired by justice Nirmaljit Kaur, was attended by several dignitaries, including PSHRC secretary Varinder Kumar Sharma, Special DGP PSHRC Prabodh Kumar, UT deputy commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh, municipal corporation joint commissioner Paviter Singh, member secretary of the State Legal Service Authority Surinder Kumar and Rajiv Tiwari, director of public relations Chandigarh, along with other senior officials from Chandigarh administration.
