Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Dalvir Singh Kala Jawanda was shot by unidentified assailants in Bareta town of Mansa district on Monday evening, officials said.
Police said the attack took place near Jawanda’s arthiya (commission agent) shop.
Officials privy to the matter said the former Mansa zila parishad member sustained a bullet injury to the abdomen and was rushed to the sub-divisional government hospital in Budhlada. After administering first aid, he was referred to a hospital in Ludhiana for further treatment.
Budhlada deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sikander Singh Cheema said preliminary investigation suggested that the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at Jawanda before fleeing.
“CCTV footage from the area is being examined, and police teams have been formed to identify and arrest the assailant,” the DSP said.
