Two solo paragliders who were stranded in the Dhauladhar mountain ranges in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh were rescued with the help of Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters on Sunday, officials said.
The two pilots had taken off from Bir-Billing in the Baijath sub-division of Kangra and both had crash landed in the mountain ranges, after which the rescue operation was launched. Due to the lack of road connectivity in the remote and inaccessible mountainous region, the administration immediately requested helicopter assistance, and both paragliders were rescued.
Kangra deputy commissioner Hemraj Bairwa said that paraglider pilot Arun Singh of Rajasthan was seriously injured in the accident, while another paraglider, Ranjan Gupta, was trapped in a tree. “Air Force personnel were deployed to rescue both. A special rescue operation was launched using helicopters. Through coordinated efforts, both were safely evacuated and admitted to Vivekanand Hospital in Palampur, where they are currently undergoing treatment,” he said.
He added that the crash site was located in a remote and treacherous area, which could take several hours to reach on foot. Therefore, helicopter rescue was the only effective option.
