Women activists of Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) on Sunday took out a protest march against the BJP-led central government over the violence in Manipur.
Raising slogans, members of the union’s women wing marched from PUDA Bhawan towards Chandigarh to hand over a memorandum to Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit. But they were stopped by police near Model Jail, Sector 51. After a detailed dialogue, police from Chandigarh and Mohali allowed a bus to ferry a delegation to Punjab Raj Bhavan.
Farmer leader Harinder Kaur Bindu said the delegation handed over the memorandum, demanding security for women and extensive confidence-building steps to restore unity among various communities of Manipur.
Union’s general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan said earlier hundreds of women assembled at the rally near PUDA Bhawan and demanded action against Manipur chief minister Biren Singh for failing to bring the violence under control. They also demanded strict punishment for mobs that were directing violence against women in Manipur.
