New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Saturday alleged that more than 5,000 spa centres are operating in the national capital even as civic bodies claim there are only 498 such centres in the city.

The commission said it had issued a notice to an online search engine seeking information of the number of spa centres registered with them.

“In its response the online portal said they have a list of more than 5,000 spas operating in Delhi,” the DCW said in a statement issued on Saturday.

The women’s panel said the city’s three municipal bodies — East Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and North Delhi Municipal Corporation — claim there are only 498 spas.

The South Corporation said that 297 spas are operating in its zone while North and East corporations said they have 127 and 60 such centres under their jurisdiction, respectively, it said.

Only last month, the panel had claimed to have busted sex rackets allegedly operating under the garb of such spa centres in the city.

“While the company has informed the approximate number of the spa operating in the capital, it had sought six weeks time to collate the data. However, in a fresh notice issued to them we have asked them collate all the data and submit to us,” the panel said.

It was after several advertisements of spa and massage centres were noticed on the website that a notice was issued to the company head.

“The search engine had earlier said that they are checking their internal policies and taking necessary approvals for providing the data as it may include ‘sensitive personal information’,” it said.

Meanwhile, a senior municipal corporation official said, “We have only 498 spa centres registered with us. This is the only number we have in our list. We have no idea about the authenticity of the numbers as claimed by DCW.”
