28-year-old man dies of electric shock while charging e-rickshaw

A 28-year-old man died from an electric shock while charging his e-rickshaw in Delhi; police investigate and charge the station owner with negligence.

A 28-year-old man died after suffering an electric shock while charging his e-rickshaw at a charging station in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh area on Thursday, police said, adding that a case has been registered and an inquiry is underway.

The deceased, identified as Yograj Gautam, a resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, was living as a tenant in Paschim Puri with his parents and brother, police said. (Representative photo)

The deceased, identified as Yograj Gautam, a resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, was living as a tenant in Paschim Puri with his parents and brother, police said.

According to police, Gautam was charging the battery of his e-rickshaw at Pushpa Chamber in LSC Market, Punjabi Bagh, around 3pm when he came in contact with an electrical source and suffered an electric shock.

“An MLC (medico legal case) was received from Balaji Action Hospital in Paschim Vihar at the Punjabi Bagh police station around 3pm regarding a person receiving an electric shock while charging an e-rickshaw at Pushpa Chamber, LSC Market, Punjabi Bagh. The investigating officer, along with staff, reached the hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” said a police officer.

“On Thursday morning, he was charging the battery of his e-rickshaw when he came in contact with an electrical source and received an electric shock. He was declared brought dead by the doctor at the hospital. The deceased was unmarried and was residing with his parents and brother. The incident was caused due to negligence of the charging point owner, Bali Khanna,” said DCP (west) Hareshwar Swami.

Police said Khanna is being questioned about the materials used at the charging station and the safety measures in place.
