A boy, aged around eight years, is feared to have drowned after he allegedly fell into a drain near Jafarabad Metro station on Thursday afternoon, fire department and police officials said. Rescue operation continued but the child could not be rescued till Thursday evening.
Deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Rahul Alwal said that a passerby called the Welcome police station about an unidentified child drowning in the drain at around 1.15pm. When police reached the spot, the caller told them the child -- around 8-10 years old -- fell in the drain and was not visible.
“The divers conducted intensive search of the drain/sewerage channel six to seven times but could not locate the child. Further, no missing person’s complaint was received in the area regarding any child. Announcements were made through local mosques and temples to ascertain whether any child matching the description had been reported missing. Further efforts are being made to find the child,” DCP Alwal added.
