Speaking at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia on “the rising profile of Delhi as a global capital”, he said, “Delhi’s emergence as a global capital is a story about continuation rather than transformation. Historically, the city has long occupied a central place in the political, economic, and cultural life of the larger region.”

Sandhu highlighted that the city had hosted multiple international events, including the G20 and the Artificial Intelligence summit. “Hosting high-level international events demands seamless coordination across multiple agencies, resilient urban infrastructure, technology capability and responsive public institutions,” he said.

Sandhu said that Delhi’s relevance on the global stage was defined not just by visibility, but also by the quality of governance and the ease of living of its citizens.

Speaking about Delhi’s future development, he said, “Next phase of Delhi’s evolution will depend upon strengthening citizen-centric governance through use of technology, accessible and safer public services, particularly for women and children, and more efficient mobility systems.”

The LG also stated that the city’s transformation requires active participation from citizens.

He further said that expanding green cover, improving air quality, promoting sustainable mobility, scientific waste management, conserving and rejuvenating water bodies, among others, are all essential for building an environmentally responsible Delhi.
