Check legal ways to raze premises used for peddling: Delhi LG

NEW DELHI: Delhi lieutenant governor VK Saxena on Thursday asked Delhi Police and other agencies concerned to seal the properties and buildings being used for drug peddling, explore legal ways to take demolition action against them, officials aware of the matter said.

They added that the LG has also asked the transport department to make necessary provisions for cancelling the permit of the vehicles involved in drug trafficking.

Chairing the fifth meeting of the state-level committee of NCORD (National Narcotics Coordination) at LG Secretariat, Saxena urged the law enforcement agencies to work in a “mission mode” to make Delhi ‘drug-free’.

“We need strict enforcement on the ground. For that, the Delhi Police will have to identify and submit a list of all existing and new hot spots of drug trafficking in the national Capital, along with a detailed plan to eliminate them. All the properties and buildings being used for drug peddling must be sealed immediately and legal options must be explored for taking demolition action against them. All agencies concerned need to share database of drug seizures and traffickers with each other for effective monitoring and enforcement,” he said.

“Delhi Police will have to strictly enforce the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act, 1988, to detain notorious and habitual drug offenders and traffickers for a longer period. Similarly, the social welfare department of Delhi government needs to keep a strict watch around the shelter homes that have also emerged as potential centres of drug abuse,” the LG said.

A senior police officer who attended the meeting said that they had prepared a list of offenders and hot spots for drug trafficking and were cracking down on busing gangs and cartels involved in these activities.
