To expedite the construction of a solid waste management plant based on the concept of waste to energy, the Ghaziabad development authority has decided to purchase land own its own and hand it over to the Ghaziabad municipal-corporation for further development.
The decision comes after the private developers on NH-24 failed to handover the land for the site. Recently, the authority had allotted nearly 19 acres to the corporation, while the remaining 16.8 acres were to be procured from private developers by May 20.
“Since the developers have not given us the remaining land, the authority will go for direct purchase from farmers. The bill will be raised to the private developers. The developers have failed to give possession to applicants from economically weaker sections and lower income groups as part of a policy of the stategovernment,” said Kanchan Verma, vice-chairperson, GDA.
“Since there is an immediate need to expedite the solid waste disposal activities, we will go for direct purchase. The city is growing and there is an urgent need to scientifically dispose of the city’s solid waste,” she added.
The plant at Galand near NH-24 will operate in line with the concept of waste-to-energy and will be able to produce 15 megawatt of electricity. The power produced by treating waste will be sold to the electricity department by the contractor. The cost of installing the plant has been pegged at ₹200 crore and it will be able to process nearly 1,000-1,500 metric tonnes of daily solid waste. The city, at present, produces 950 metric tonnes of daily solid waste but has no facility to dispose it in a scientific manner.

{{/usCountry}}The garbage thrown up by the city is presently dumped and disposed in an unscientific manner at a temporary landfill site at Pratap Vihar. Earlier, a solid waste management plant (SWMP) had been proposed at a site at Dundahera near NH-24.
However, in a major setback to the proposed SWMP, the National Green Tribunal in December, 2016 quashed the environmental clearance (EC) issued for the project and also the NOC issued by the UP pollution control board.
In a meeting held with private developers on May 18, it was decided that in case it fails to provide the remaining land for the facility by May 20, the authority will order sealing of the projects and stop ongoing construction work.
