The fire department headquarters in Sector 29 received a call about the incident around 2.15pm and immediately dispatched a team to douse the blaze, said the officials.

“A fire tender was immediately dispatched from the Sector 29 office, and the firefighters took five minutes to douse the blaze. The front half of the van was completely gutted in fire, however, we were able to prevent it from spreading to the fuel tank,” said Gulshan Kalra, deputy director of Haryana fire services.

The van driver and his co-passenger alleged that they were carrying around ₹14 lakh cash in the vehicle, Kalra said. “We did not find any cash — burnt or in good condition — from inside the van. We suspect that the fire broke out due to a short circuit in the wiring of the vehicle. An investigation is underway,” said Kalra.

According to the fire department officials, the driver and his co-passenger got out of the van soon after they noticed smoke coming out of the front part of the vehicle. The entire van was gutted in fire with a few minutes.

The incident took place on the carriageway carrying traffic from Jaipur towards Delhi, due to which there was a minor traffic snarl on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
