The expansion is expected to widen surveillance coverage and tighten the net on traffic violators flouting speed limits.

Prabhat Pandey, ARTO (enforcement), said the interceptor vehicles will maintain round-the-clock vigilance. Once a violation is detected through the speed gun, officials in the interceptor vehicle will issue challans based on captured details.

Overspeeding attracts a fine of 2,000. The driving licence of the violator may also be suspended in certain cases, though Pandey noted this process can be lengthy. “These advanced machines can identify the vehicle number and capture the face of the violator, but for licence cancellation, we need complete licence details. This makes immediate suspension difficult,” he said.

After issuing a notice to the violator, the licence can be suspended once produced or traced. “The machines do not automatically issue challans; an authorised officer must complete the process manually,” an official clarified.
