The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a heatwave warning for several districts in Uttar Pradesh. An ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ alert has been issued for severe heatwave at isolated places in the state. MeT official said there would be no relief till June 10.
The IMD uses four-colour codes for weather warnings — green (no action needed), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action).
The met department has issued an orange alert for Banda, Chitrakoot, Kausambhi, Prayagraj and Fatehpur districts while a yellow alert was sounded for Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Kanpur City, Kanpur dehat, Mathura, Hathras, Kashganj, Etah, Agra, Firozabad, Etawah, Japan, Hamirpur, Jhansi and Lalitpur.
A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature was 40 degrees Celsius or higher or remains 4.5 degrees above normal over two consecutive days. The day temperature in U.P. districts went up by as much as 5.5 degrees Celsius above normal.
Banda was the hottest in the state, with the temperature soaring to 46.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Fatehgarh (46.4), Kanpur (45.9), Prayagraj (45.7), Orai (45.5), Agra (44.8) and Etawah (43.6).
The maximum and minimum temperatures in the state capital was recorded at 42.7 and 29.1 degree Celsius, respectively, said JP Gupta, MeT director.
