Officials recover drugs, gold worth ₹58 cr in separate seizures

Mumbai The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department arrested three foreigners at the Mumbai International Airport with ₹56.28 crore worth heroin.

While two of the women came in a flight from Nairobi with 6 kg and 2 kg contraband respectively in their checked-in luggage, the third one came from Addis Ababa, concealing 40 gram of the narcotic in her rectum.

According to officials, based on passenger profiling and surveillance, a passenger who had arrived from Nairobi on March 5 was intercepted. Upon checking, 6 kg of white powdery substance worth ₹42 crore was recovered from her bag.

In a similar case with similar modus operandi, the AIU officials intercepted another foreign national who arrived from Kinshasa with 2kg of heroin worth ₹14 crore in her bag. The third woman was arrested on March 5 as well. During interrogation, the passenger confessed to concealing narcotics in her rectum in the form of four capsules.

Another team of AIU arrested three people including two passengers and one handler involved in two separate cases of gold smuggling on March 4 and seized a total of 3.59 kg gold worth ₹1.66 crore from them.

Another team of AIU officials intercepted a foreign national of the Republic of Sudan and found gold concealed in compound form in the ankle caps worn by him. The agency recovered 2.39 kg of gold worth ₹1.12 crore from the passenger.
