Sent back to Bangladesh, returns via jungle route; crime branch arrests him again

MUMBAI: A 46-year-old Bangladeshi national who was deported last year after being arrested for illegally staying in India has been arrested again by the Mumbai Crime Branch after allegedly sneaking back into the country through the jungle route and returning to Mumbai

MUMBAI: A 46-year-old Bangladeshi national who was deported last year after being arrested for illegally staying in India has been arrested again by the Mumbai Crime Branch after allegedly sneaking back into the country through the jungle route and returning to Mumbai.

The accused, identified as Mohammad Janhangir Abdul Razzak Topadar alias Mohammad Janhangir Abdul Latif Shaikh, was handed over to the Wadala Truck Terminus police station, where a fresh case has been registered against him under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

According to Crime Branch Unit IV officers, they received a tip-off that a Bangladeshi national employed at an under-construction site in Wadala would be passing through Shaikh Mistry Road.

“We received specific information that a Bangladeshi resident working at an under-construction site in Wadala was coming to Shaikh Mistry Road,” a Crime Branch officer said.

Acting on the input, officers intercepted the suspect and asked him to produce identity documents. He identified himself as Mohammad Janhangir Abdul Razzak Topadar alias Mohammad Janhangir Abdul Latif Shaikh. As it was raining, the officers took him to a nearby police chowki for further questioning, during which he admitted that he hailed from Shariatpur in Bangladesh.

Police further found that he had earlier been arrested by the Chunabhatti police in May 2025 for illegally residing in India and was subsequently deported to Bangladesh.

“However, he illegally re-entered India through the jungle route shortly after being sent back and resumed living in Mumbai,” the officer said.

A case has been registered against the accused under Section 21 (penalty for entry without a valid passport or travel documents) of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
