With this addition, the total number of 15-car services on the Western line will rise from 211 to 227, officials said on Tuesday evening.

The move is aimed at easing overcrowding on the busy Churchgate–Virar corridor, which spans about 60 km and sees heavy commuter traffic daily. The upgraded services will operate between key stations, including Churchgate, Virar, Vasai, Bhayandar and Borivali.

Western Railway’s chief public relations officer (CPRO) Vineet Abhishek said, “Out of the 16 services being converted, eight will run during peak hours—four in the morning and four in the evening.”

Officials said the augmentation is expected to improve travel comfort and better manage increasing passenger demand on the suburban network.
