A 28-year-old man died on Tuesday after being electrocuted at a railway line expansion site at Kailashpur Railway Crossing in Dadri. On Wednesday morning, his family protested and refused to cremate him until the railway authorities compensated them. Finally, however, they performed the final rites after receiving assurance from the district administration by the evening.

On Tuesday morning, Rohit Singh, a resident of Dadri’s Badalpur village, was working on the railway track and was stationed on a crane when he accidentally came into contact with a live electric wire above the track.

“Rohit was standing on a hydraulic crane when a portion touched the wire above the under-construction track. He was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival,” said Devendra Singh, Rohit’s uncle.

The police registered a first information report under Section 304A (causing death due to negligence) against the contractor in connection with the incident.

“After a post-mortem, we returned the body to the family by Tuesday night. The deceased man was a contract worker hired to expand a railway line. We have booked the contractor, who is on the run, and we have deployed teams to capture him,” said Sujeet Upadhyay, station house officer of Dadri police station.

On Wednesday morning, Rohit’s family refused to cremate his body until the railway authorities compensated them. His family members alleged negligence on the part of Rohit’s contractor.

“Before starting the work, Rohit’s supervisor had asked the contractor to shut down the electric supply into the line. However, Rohit died because of the contractor’s negligence. He was the only earning member of the family and had a wife and two kids to support. We demand that the authorities provide compensation for his death,” Devendra said.

The deceased man’s family members had gathered outside their home in Badalpur village to stage a protest. However, the sub-divisional magistrate of Dadri, Alok Kumar Gupta, assured them that he would convey their demands to the concerned authorities.

“It is an unfortunate incident, and we have forwarded the family’s demands to the concerned authorities. We have assured them of our assistance,” said Gupta.
