Three personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), were killed in a gunfight with Maoists in Bastar’s Sukma district on Saturday, police said.
Inspector general of police (IG), Bastar range, Sunderaj P said that the gunfight took place around 9am on Saturday around Jagargunda and Kunded villages in south Sukma.
“A police team was out on a search operation when Maoists attacked them. The encounter lasted for 20 minutes in the Jagargonda area” said the IG.

“One ASI Ramuram Nag, assistant constable Kunjam Joga and Sainik Vanjam Bheema were killed in the exchange of fire,” he added.
Superintendent of police (SP), Sukma, Sunil Sharma said that around 50 security personnel comprising DRG and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) began a combing operation in Jagargonda at 7am on Saturday amid the reports of Maoists hiding in the area.
“At 8.30am, when the police party reached near village Kunder, an encounter started between the patrolling party and Maoists. Three police personnel died and one got injured. The Maoists have escaped from the spot taking the arms belonging to cops, including an AK-47,” said Sharma.
He added that another police team with additional troops have been deployed and a combing operation is going on in the area.

Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, expressing grief over this incident, said that the sacrifices of the personnel will not be in vain and Maoists will have to bear the consequences.
On February 20, two police personnel were allegedly killed by Maoists in the Rajnandgaon district.
