The blaze erupted around 4am at Basanti Villa Apartment in the Laxmisagar area, when most residents were asleep. Fire services personnel rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after a rescue operation that evacuated about 27 residents.

Police said Biswajit Behera (70), a caretaker who lived in a room in the apartment with his wife Sulabha Behera (65) and granddaughter Tejeswari Behera (10), died due to burn injuries as well as suffocation.

Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been triggered by a short circuit in an electrical panel board located in the guard room, though the exact cause is yet to be confirmed.

Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das said significant property damage was reported in the building.
