Left parties staged a protest march in the state capital on Monday against the proposed Viksit Bharat Rozgar Evam Aajeevika Guarantee Mission (Rural) Bill, alleging that it would dismantle the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and weaken employment security for rural and agricultural workers.

The demonstration was organised jointly by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, CPI (Marxist-Leninist) and the Forward Bloc, a press release read. Dozens of party workers participated in the march, raising slogans against the Centre’s move and demanding continuation of MGNREGA in its existing form.

Following the protest, the Joint Left Front submitted a memorandum addressed to the President of India through the Lucknow district magistrate.

In the letter dated December 22, 2025 the parties alleged that the proposed bill would “kill MGNREGA in a phased manner” by altering the funding structure and shifting a higher financial burden to state governments. The parties demanded immediate withdrawal of the proposed bill.
