Mumbai: Students of Sir JJ School of Art called off their protest on Friday

Mumbai: Students of Sir JJ School of Art called off their protest on Friday. The development came a day after minister for higher and technical education, Chandrakant Patil, assured them of accommodation and filling vacant positions.

Santosh Parkar, general secretary, of JJ School of Art, said, “In our 45-minute-long discussion, the minister assured us that our demands will be met.”

Students said they were satisfied with the government’s response, and started attending classes.

For almost a week, students of JJ School of art were protesting against the lack of basic infrastructure such as hostels as well as the quality of education due to vacancies of faculty. On November 24, Patil met officials and student representatives. In the meeting, the state government provided funds for the new hostel on the college campus, construction of which is likely to take two years.

Meanwhile, temporary accommodation for students from rural areas of the state will be provided at Matoshree hostel on B Road, Churchgate. A decision was taken to rent a guest house of the Public Works Department (PWD) in Andheri for the girl’s hostel.

Patil also told Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) to initiate the filling of vacant posts in the JJ school of art on a priority basis.
