The villagers tied the duo to an electric pole and beat them mercilessly to a point that the two lost consciousness. The Atri police rescued to the spot and took them to the Magadh Medical College and Hospital in Gaya where one of them succumbed during treatment on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Harekrishna Singh (45) of Shahjipur village, while his critically injured accomplice was Nawada resident Navlesh Kumar (50).

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ashish Bharti said that the families of the victims have been informed and an autopsy was conducted.

A murder case has been registered against five named and 10 unidentified people based on the statement of the deceased’s wife Rita Devi. Those identified have been arrested, the SSP added.
