A 16-year-old girl, allegedly kept in captivity by her mother and elder sister, was rescued from East Delhi’s Mandawali on Sunday morning, police said.
The room in which the girl was found locked was strewn with garbage.
The girl, who has been admitted to the LBS Hospital in Mayur Vihar for treatment of traumatic disorders, did not tell the police yet the reason for her confinement.
Neighbours told police that the girl was locked up in the room by her mother and sister for “many years”.
The duo, however, claimed that the girl was depressed and she had kept herself confined to a room for the last three weeks.
Omvir Singh, DCP (East), told HT that when a police team reached the house, the room was locked from inside.
The girl was found lying on a cot amid piles of garbage. A ceiling fan and a bulb were the other amenities in the room.
She was not in a position to converse with the police. She was immediately moved to the hospital.
Apart from the girl, the only other occupants of the house were her mother and sister. The DCP said prima facie it did not appear to be a case of sexual abuse.

{{/usCountry}}The call to the police was made by a neighbour who claimed the girl was locked up forcibly and that she was in a poor health. The girl’s cries had drawn the neighbour’s attention, the caller claimed.
Police are speaking to the girl’s mother and sister about the circumstances in which she was found. They are also probing the possible reasons for her supposed depression.
