Even as the Maratha community is organising protests all over the state to demand changes in the Atrocity Act, a massive rally to save the Atrocities Act was organised on Thursday from New Panvel to Panvel.
The rally started from Abhyudaya Bank in New and ended at the Prant office in Panvel.
The rally saw participation from members of the SC and ST communities, as well as members of other Dalit organisations. They had come from Panvel, Raigad, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai, and Thane.
Their demands included the strengthening of the atrocities act, the deciding of court cases under the Act within 6 months, firearm licences be given to Dalits and tribals, end of exploitation against tribals, and action against those attacking the police.
“There is a lot of misconception about the Act. There are still a lot of loopholes in it and a lot of provisions have remained only on paper,” said Subhash Gaikwad, one of the leaders of the rally.
“The Act has been formulated to protect the downtrodden, the Dalits, but that is not happening. Hence we organised the morcha to convey our demands,” he added.
