Pune: The Maharashtra directorate of higher education (DHE) on July 31 instructed all state public universities to comply with the directive issued by the Bar Council of India (BCI) on July 23. The Council has directed all universities offering legal education to conduct immediate physical inspection of the institutions and submit a compliance report within six weeks. The directive follows observations reportedly made by the Supreme Court over the declining quality of legal education and the functioning of substandard law institutions. The inspections will assess compliance with the Rules of Legal Education, 2008, particularly in relation to infrastructure, academic standards and faculty strength. Shailendra Deolankar, director of higher education, said, “All state public universities have been directed to submit a consolidated report to BCI within the timeline.”
