Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has imposed a fine of ₹35,000 on Parijat Multispeciality and Dental Clinic in Kudalwadi for allegedly disposing of biomedical waste along with household garbage, civic officials said on Saturday. The action followed the discovery of a large quantity of biomedical waste, including a box containing used syringes, mixed with regular waste at Sector 13, Chikhali. Following the detection of the waste, the civic administration conducted an inspection and penalised the clinic for violating biomedical waste management norms.
“Improper disposal of biomedical waste is extremely hazardous to public health and the environment,” said Dr Pradeep Thengal, deputy commissioner, PCMC.
Ajinkya Yele, PCMC K ward officer, said healthcare establishments are legally required to dispose of biomedical waste through authorised scientific methods.
Dr Sufiyan Shaikh of Parijat Multispeciality and Dental Clinic said the facility has a registered agency for biomedical waste collection and disposal.
“This incident was accidental. Renovation work is underway at the clinic, and labourers mistakenly disposed of medical waste along with general waste,” he said.
