The art of listening

There is a non-stop thought process in our minds. One thought is closely knitted and joined to the next and they don’t leave our mind unoccupied even for a second. As a result, we risk missing a part or the entire message when someone talks to us.

We get into drawing conclusions by switching on all our thinking engines when someone starts talking. We may think about the person’s good or bad talking style, or even his apparel, his shoes, or any other such silly thing while he is addressing us.

Listening must be done with an open mind, and without thinking. One must listen in a way like giving someone a total blank paper to write his message on it.

The remedy lies not in forcing your mind to stop thinking. When you keep on thinking, your body gets tired. When you take some rest, your mind doesn’t stop. If you are awake, the conscious part is active; and when you are asleep, the subconscious part activates itself and gets you dreaming.

It may be too hard to do so initially; you may need ‘AUM’ voice recitation in the background to help you get aligned with just the voice and lose track of your mind.

‘AUM’ has spiritual healing power. The soul will slowly connect with voice and put your mind to rest.

If learners could listen with an open mind to their Guru, if children and parents could listen to each other with open minds, if husband and wife could listen to each other properly, if nations could listen to each other with due attention, I believe it would be a step closer to a peaceful society and a happier world.
