Right after them, the Indian players spring out confidently and take their respective fielding positions. It is a fresh opening pair for the West Indies in the form of John Campbell and Keacy Carty. Daren Ganga on air informs us that this is the 12th opening combination for the Windies in this World Cup cycle. 8:26 AM IST Ruturaj Gaikwad (India) - On his form since that hundred against South Africa last year, Gaikwad says that was a long time ago, with plenty of cricket in between, including the IPL, played across different conditions and different batting positions. He admits there is nervousness returning to the international level after a gap, but he feels the last game was a step forward, just getting out there and settling in for a while. On dealing with limited opportunities, he keeps his approach simple, saying it comes down to giving his best whenever the chance to play for India arrives, rather than dwelling on when the next opportunity might come. He concedes it can be tough to process at times, but says the focus has to stay on enjoying the honour of playing for the country. On adapting to batting at number 4, Gaikwad describes it as a real adjustment, having opened in over a hundred first class innings before this. He then explains that middle-order batting at the international level brings its own demands, from rotating strike to picking the right option at the right time, unlike the powerplay where fielders are in, and boundaries come easier. He says the key is adapting to the situation while still backing his own strengths.

8:25 AM IST PITCH REPORT - Murali Kartik is inspecting the conditions in Guwahati. Starts by describing the conditions as warm and humid, with more heat still to come, in what he calls a high dew zone. He notes that the square boundaries measure 61 meters to one side and 69 meters to the other, and it is 74 meters straight down the ground. Details that both ODIs played here have produced big totals, in excess of 300. Daren Ganga joins him and calls it a strong batting surface with a history of high scores. He points out more grass on this pitch compared to Trivandrum, which could offer the seamers extra lateral movement. He also adds that the hard, red soil base means the ball should still come on nicely for the batters. Ganga also expects bowlers to target the shorter side to claw back some advantage. Adds that dew will turn heavily in the chasing team's favour later in the innings. Kartik then concludes by relaying the curator's claim that dew has been managed and should not be a major factor.

Hope mentions that it is about identifying the areas they need to improve and finding ways to get better. According to him, it is about going out there and playing good cricket and doing the right things. Hope says that the surface looks good and they need to assess quickly and see how to score at the back end. He also informs that they have made four changes but jokingly says he is not going to run his head through them and you can just see the graphics.

On the last game, Gill is pleased with how his side responded, having come under pressure through the first 20 to 25 overs before fighting back well. He points out that conditions in Guwahati are even more humid and hotter, which he sees as a fresh test for his fast bowlers. On fielding standards, he agrees that intensity in the field during the middle overs is what decides matches in this format. Also admits it is an area his side could have sharpened up in the last game. He is hopeful for an improvement this time. On the top order, Gill is happy with how the batting group is shaping up, adding that Rohit looked to be finding good touch as well, which he hopes carries into another strong showing. A win at Barsapara Cricket Stadium would give India a 14th straight ODI series win over the Windies. It would also be a 5th straight series defeat in the format for the Men in Maroon, who failed to secure automatic qualification for next year's ODI World Cup and are set to feature in the Qualifiers. Class up top - The top order simply hasn't had an off day in a while. Shubman Gill has crossed fifty in 7 of his 9 ODI innings in 2026 and will walk into this one full of confidence after his century in the opener. Rohit Sharma is holding down his end nicely too, while Virat Kohli's 55th ODI century took him past 15,000 ODI runs. More tellingly, his 9 sixes in that innings were a career high for a single ODI knock, suggesting a continued evolution in his strike-rate profile at 37. Guwahati has been a happy hunting ground for this pair before. When India last faced the Windies here in 2018, both Rohit and Kohli hit hundreds as India chased down 323 with ease. Kuldeep finds his mojo - Kuldeep Yadav is the story coming into this one. Having played just 5 of India's 10 ODIs this year, he finally got his chance in the opener and responded with a four-wicket haul that sparked India's turnaround. Mohammed Siraj did not feature in the series opener, which raised a few eyebrows given his recent lack of rhythm and the fact that he is the kind of bowler who benefits from regular game time. Whether he can find a place in the side remains to be seen. Nitish Kumar Reddy continues to be the player India are looking at as a backup option for Hardik Pandya, given his fitness concerns. Taking the new ball did not quite work for him in the opener, but he did a decent job when he returned for his later spells and will be hoping to build on that here. Need more with the bat - The Windies' top order has shown it can match India stride for stride, and the 135-run opening stand in the opener was proof of that. The bigger question is what happens once that platform is set, with the middle order having struggled to build on strong starts. Shai Hope remains their most dependable batter, but he has been short of runs lately and will be looking to draw on all his experience. Justin Greaves, batting in a new role as opener, thrived with a maiden ODI century, but his availability remains a concern after picking up a right-leg issue. If he is not fit enough, that could open the door for Sherfane Rutherford to come in. Fixing the attack - Dropping Gill on 11 proved very costly for the Windies, but the bigger concern was that they lacked potency with the new ball. Matthew Forde's gentle floaters did not pose any kind of threat, and in hindsight they would have been better off starting Alzarri Joseph with the new ball, sharing the attack with Jayden Seales. Whether they make that switch remains to be seen. Shamar Joseph was seen on the sidelines wearing a mask, which could mean he is under the weather. If that is the case, his availability for the next game will be worth keeping an eye on. India's Kuldeep Yadav showed the worth of having a wrist spinner in the side, while West Indies' own wrist spinner, Vitel Lawes, sat on the sidelines watching on. Having Lawes in the side could have given West Indies the X factor they were missing, and his presence in Guwahati could make a real difference.
