India beat New Zealand by 6 wickets

Commentary

10:27 AM IST Still a lot to play for - The T20I series between New Zealand and India might be done in terms of who takes the trophy home, but with the ODI series up next, the remaining two T20I games might serve as a momentum carrier. The hosts will be desperate for a win, whereas India will be brimming with confidence. The 4th T20I is set to be played at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, October 30. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 am GMT (12.30 pm IST), but be sure to join us a lot sooner for the build-up to the contest as well. Until then, tale care and goodbye.
10:27 AM IST The Indian skipper - Shreyas Iyer says it was absolutely pleasing to watch Abhishek and Sooryavanshi bat at the top. He admits that when he and Samson were at the crease, the ball was still swinging a bit, and says it was insane how the openers managed to hit it out of the park. He says scoring 100 in five overs is something he has not seen before at the international level. On the message to play fearlessly, Iyer says it is essential, especially overseas where players will be challenged. He credits the openers for an exceptional effort and hopes they continue in the same form with two games remaining. He is glad with how the squad turned up despite the travel and jet lag, calling it mind-boggling. On the bowling, Iyer admits that India were conceding runs when bowling hard lengths or full deliveries, so he asked the bowlers to target the yorkers. That, he details, helped keep New Zealand under ten runs an over, with the plan being to restrict them below 200.
10:22 AM IST The captain of New Zealand - Mitchell Santner says that it was a tough loss, and it's difficult to stop some of the Indian batters when they get going. He adds that they lost the toss again, but Daryl Mitchell and Bevon Jacobs did well and seemed on course for 200, which didn't quite happen. He also feels that there was some dew, but credits the Indian batters for the way they played. Santner feels that the batting is coming along well, with different guys putting their hands up in different games. On holding himself back during the chase, Santner feels that he saw how Axar Patel went about it in the first innings, and he didn't come on as there were two left-handers going pretty strong, and they will look to find a way during such situations in the future.
10:25 AM IST Player of Match - No prizes for guessing, and it is Abhishek Sharma who gets the accolade for his swashbuckling knock of 113 off 38 balls. Sharma says the key was simple, saying that he and Vaibhav simply wanted to enjoy themselves, especially in the Powerplay. He explains that while fielding, they absorbed the pressure and noted the extra bounce, but felt the ground dimensions allowed them to make use of the Powerplay and the pace on offer. He praises Vaibhav's start in the first over as really special and says their plan was to build momentum for the team and keep going. On the freedom given by the coaching staff and captain, Abhishek says it is not exactly easy, but preparation behind the scenes makes the difference. He gives a special mention to the coaches and the sidearm throwdowns, saying preparation is crucial for a batter. He adds that reading the conditions, ground dimensions and bowlers helps him choose his shots, and that a good practice session the previous day allowed him to carry that confidence into the match. He feels he had visualised the setting, and it played out that way. Responding to Yuvraj Singh's social media remark that he still cannot score a fifty off 12 balls, Abhishek says he does not know what kind of cricket Yuvraj was playing in that era, but admits that it is not easy at all. He adds that any batter would want to bat like that, but a fifty in 12 balls happens only once in a while. He stresses that he does not chase milestones, and the aim is always to win the game for the team. He says he and Vaibhav wanted to carry that approach through the series, and it worked well.
10:17 AM IST Presentation time...
10:29 AM IST Recapping the first innings - Earlier in the game, Shreyas Iyer won yet another toss and asked New Zealand to bat first. Tim Seifert got out pretty early on, but Finn Allen and Daryl Mitchell launched a counter-attack and got the hosts into a position of promise. Allen got out in the 40s, but Mitchell went on to stay on till the end, remaining unbeaten on 89 as Bevon Jacobs played a handy knock as well. India weren't at their best with the ball and Bhuvneshwar Kumar struggled to make an impact yet again, but the death bowling was pretty solid as Prince Yadav made a fine comeback and Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy nailed their yorkers as well, managing to keep New Zealand under the 200-run mark.
10:13 AM IST No show in the Powerplay - It was really an underwhelming showing with the ball from the Kiwis in the first 6 overs. Also, Mitchell Santner's reluctance to bowl himself against the two left-handed openers didn't help, and by the time he came on to bowl, the game was long gone. New Zealand conceded 118 runs in the Powerplay, and a total of 178 runs in the first 10 overs, before Kyle Jamieson and Mitchell Santner picked up a few late wickets. Matthew Fisher also got his maiden T20I wicket by dismissing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, but overall, it was another un-Kiwi like showing in the field from New Zealand.
10:11 AM IST New opening pair blitz - India made a change up top and sent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to open alongside Abhishek Sharma, and the duo put on a batting show of the highest order. They racked up 118 runs in the Powerplay, which is a record for a full-member nation in T20Is, before their stand eventually ended at 133 runs. Abhishek, in particular, was on a different tangent as he smoked the ball to all parts of the ground. Sooryavanshi missed out on a half-century, but Sharma notched up a sensational ton off just 35 balls before getting out. India did lose steam towards the end, but managed to get over the line with plenty of time to spare.
10:09 AM IST Sealing the series in style - India have clinched this five-match T20I series 3-0 with two games in hand, and the third game has been completely one-sided, or at least the second half of the game was. New Zealand have a lot of work to do now if they want to avoid a clean sweep.

Kyle Jamieson to Naman Dhir, 4 runs

FOUR! An anticlimactic end to the match, but India beat New Zealand by 6 wickets and 40 balls to spare. A good-length delivery bashed hard into the pitch by Jamieson. Naman Dhir waits back and looks to punch it to the off side, but the ball straightens up a bit, takes a good chunk of the outside edge and rifles behind to the deep third fence. A famous, famous win for the Men in Blue as they made chasing 199 look like a stroll in the park.

10:08 AM IST India aren't quite there yet as they lose another wicket. Naman Dhir is the new batter in.

Kyle Jamieson to Sanju Samson, no run

OUT! YOU MISS, I HIT! Some late joy for New Zealand before they head to Auckland. Kyle cannons in a very full ball, aimed at the stumps. Sanju Samson exposes the sticks by backing away and looking to loft it over the off side. But he gets a tad late to bring his bat down and misses to connect as the ball makes an absolute mess of the timber behind. India are 195/4, needing 4 more.

Mitchell Santner to Shreyas Iyer, no run

OUT! CAUGHT! Santner, who is yet to concede a boundary, picks up a wicket. He dishes out a full toss that drifts into the batter. Iyer sinks his back knee into the pitch and tries to slog it over deep mid-wicket, but his bat gets twisted at the point of contact while dragging it across. Hence, his timing goes all wrong and he offers a straightforward catch to deep mid-wicket. Phillips is not dropping those at all. India are 193/3, needing 6 more to win.

Looped up, landing it full on middle, drifting it in. Sanju Samson stays leg side of the ball and squeezes it away to the right of the diving point fielder for a single.

9:52 AM IST DRINKS! Time for a breather as Abhishek Sharma walks back to rousing applause from the crowd, and he gives a hug to the incoming Shreyas Iyer on his way back to the dugout. Right then, in terms of this contest, India need just 21 more off 60 balls and have a series win in their sights. Shouldn't be much of a fuss, but the Kiwis will look to delay the inevitable for as long as possible. The Indian skipper, Shreyas Iyer, is the new batter in.

Kyle Jamieson to Abhishek Sharma, no run

OUT! IN THE AIR AND CAUGHT! This time, GP makes no mistake with a comparatively simple catch. The crowd rises up to applaud a tremendous knock from Abhishek. India are 178/2. Full and outside off, Abhishek advances but fails to get to the pitch of it. He tries to heave it across the line, the bat turning slightly in his hands as he connects off the inside half towards deep mid-wicket. Glenn Phillips settles under it and takes a safe catch.

9.5

Kyle Jamieson to Abhishek Sharma, 4 runs

DROPPED AND FOUR! A Superman effort by Phillips. Full marks for the effort. Short of a length on leg stump and angled across the left-hander. Abhishek backs away and pulls it to the left of deep mid-wicket but gets it a bit mistimed off the inner half of the bat. Glenn Phillips launches himself full stretch to his left, almost like a Superman, but cannot hold on. He gets fingertips to it, but it deflects and lands just short of the rope. The umpires check the replay before signalling four. Only Phillips could have got anywhere near that one.

6

Kyle Jamieson to Abhishek Sharma, 6 runs

SIX! In a hurry to finish things off now! A juicy half-volley, on the stumps, Abhishek swings it effortlessly over deep square leg. Targets the smallest boundary and clears it with ease.

9.3

Kyle Jamieson to Abhishek Sharma, 4 runs

FOUR! Top edge, but that won't matter. HUNDRED FOR ABHISHEK SHARMA! Off just 35 balls, graced with ten sixes and four boundaries. That's his 4th T20I century. Astonishing batting from him as he has set Wellington on fire. Seems to be an off-pace delivery, on a good length, Abhishek Sharma is early into the pull shot and top edges it over the short fine leg for a boundary to get to his milestone. After all that mayhem, he folds himself into a yoga pose, perfectly calm, before breaking out an Erling Haaland-style celebration. The crowd is on its feet, roaring in appreciation of a truly special knock. They have surely got their money's worth.

FOUR! That is such a sweetly timed shot! Slightly back of a length and around the off stump, Sanju makes room by backing away and thumps it over the mid off fielder for a cracking boundary. In the air and PUT DOWN! Santner never looked comfortable under it and spills a big chance. 150 comes up for India! Full and outside off, Abhishek goes for the big hit straight down the ground but gets it off the toe end. The ball climbs high into the night sky over and between cover and mid off and swirls in the air. Santner tracks it to his right but misjudges the flight, forced into a desperate late dive, and cannot get there. The ball bursts through his hands and drops down on the ground. Two runs taken. Not an easy chance at all.

SIX! High and long enough. That was a teaser for Phillips, who can only let out a wry smile. Abhishek moves to 92! Back of a length and on the stumps. Abhishek picks it up early and launches it towards deep mid-wicket. The ball hangs up in the air forever, and Phillips, right on the fence, can do nothing to stop it. He sticks out his right hand over his head to pluck it, but it just sails over him and drops behind the ropes.

He spears in a full-length delivery, on the off stump, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gets the front foot out of the way to resume business by sending it into the stands down the ground, but cannot get the timing right this time. Goes through the shot but gets more height than distance on this one. Daryl Mitchell runs in off the ropes, a bit to his right from long on and takes a fantastic diving catch. India are 133/1, needing 66 runs to win in 77 balls.
