Perth Scorchers beat Adelaide Strikers by 32 runs

Commentary

11:56 AM IST That ends a double-header Sunday. The SCG crowd were denied full entertainment on Steven Smith's return to the Big Bash while the evening game was a high-scoring affair at the Adelaide Oval. Monday. 12th January, 2026 sees Sydney Thunder take on the Melbourne Renegades as the former would be desperate to avoid the wooden spoon. The first ball in Sydney will be bowled at 1.45 pm IST (0815 GMT) but our buildup will begin well in advance. So do tune in early then. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
11:51 AM IST Perth Scorchers' MITCHELL MARSH HAS BEEN ADJUDGED PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his stellar knock of 88 from just 51 balls. Marsh says that it was a slow start to the tournament for him, but he's shown glimpses of his best and hopes he can carry on. Adds that the wicket felt like a 220 wicket and says that it should be easy defending 230 runs but it wasn't the case and the youngsters did really well to defend the score. On Ashton Turner losing 7 tosses in a row, Mitch jokes and feels like AT should give it up, and ends by saying that hopefully they can string a few more wins together.
11:50 AM IST Tough night for Adelaide Strikers. We felt that the best chance for them would be to bat first and try to defend, because their bowling has been doing wonderfully well this season. Unfortunately, in this clash, it just came unstuck. Everyone was taken to the cleaners with the pacers conceding 140 runs combined in 10 overs. Though the spinners did stop the run flow a bit, water had flown under the bridge even before the first innings ended and then, it was just too much for their underperforming batting lineup.
12:01 PM IST Can't say this was a great bowling performance by the Scorchers but they will take it. Known historically as a squad with great bowling depth, it is their batting which has come triumphant this season. In this game too, barring Cooper Connolly, everyone teed off, taking the score to a healthy 232, which consisted of 16 sixes and 18 fours. With the ball, they struggled for most parts. It was only when Mahli Beardman came up with a double-wicket 16th over, that the slide began. David Payne ended up with 3/35 in his 4 overs. Perth have got a lot of work to do on their bowling.
11:45 AM IST Scott was cleaned up by Cooper Connolly and in the blink of an eye, 153/2 became 167/8 as wickets started to fall left, right and centre. Alex Carey was one of those wickets in the muddle but if truth be told, even though he top scored with 71, the curious thing was he faced just 39 balls in the team's 93. Now that means, either he did not get enough strike, or Perth Scorchers were smart to keep him off strike. Which is why, despite Carey playing flawlessly, the required rate kept on rising.
11:43 AM IST 233 was always going to be a tough chase for the Strikers despite this being a very flat deck. The openers, Matthew Short and a new partner, Alex Carey, got all guns blazing through a 93-run opening stand. Short got out for 52 and was then replaced by Lynn who hit a few boundaries too, to keep the run chase going. There was the leading run getter for Adelaide this season, Liam Scott, to follow too. But the middle order just fell off.
11:58 AM IST A good fist of the run chase by Adelaide Strikers but 233 was a bit too much for them in the end. They started well and in fact were going really well till the 14th over. But lack of hitters down the order hurt them. The Scorchers move back to second spot, while the Strikers are probably now on a win-or-get-knocked-out road.

Mahli Beardman to Cameron Boyce, 1 run

And that ends the contest. A short ball, outside off, Boyce pulls this to deep mid-wicket and gets just a single. PERTH SCORCHERS WIN BY 32 RUNS!

1
19.5

Mahli Beardman to Hasan Ali, 1 run

On middle and leg, Hasan whips it through mid-wicket this time and the fielder manages to get across to his left in the deep. A single taken. One more signal for OVERRATE PENALTY and it means that the Scorchers can have only 3 fielders outside the 30-yard circle now. Don't think that will matter much with 34 runs needed off the final ball.

Mahli Beardman to Hasan Ali, 4 runs

FOUR! Nice shot. On a length, Hasan Ali whips it over wide long on and finds the boundary!

Hard length on middle, hit on the up and drilled down to long on for a single.

19.2

Mahli Beardman to Cameron Boyce, 6 runs

ballImg120.6kph

SIX! Oh, a valiant effort on the boundary ropes from Finn Allen but it ends up being a six. Mahli Beardman bowls it fuller and outside off, Cameron Boyce hangs deep in the crease and smacks it up and over towards the cover fence. Allen leaps up to take the catch and recognizes that he is going over the ropes. Allen flicks the ball back up and looks to pouch it but crashes into the security guard and the ball falls beyond the ropes. Replays suggest that Allen might have already landed over the ropes before he flicked the ball back in. Anyway, it is a six.

19.1

Mahli Beardman to Cameron Boyce, 2 runs

ballImg138.0kph

A wide yorker at 138 kph, Cameron Boyce backs away to jam it out but gets an inside edge. The ball goes to the left of the keeper and Josh Inglis does well to get a glove on it. The ball deflects down to fine leg for a couple of runs.

11:33 AM IST Final over then. Beardman or Hardie? The former. 3-0-28-2 for Mahli Beardman so far.

David Payne to Cameron Boyce, 4 runs

ballImg117.4kph

FOUR! That's nicely played and it nearly goes all the way as well. Fuller delivery but on middle and leg, Cameron Boyce walks inside the line and flicks it right off the stumps, hitting it flat and towards deep backward square leg for a boundary.

18.1

David Payne to Cameron Boyce, no run

ballImg107.8kph

A swing and a miss from Boyce. Slower delivery, on a length and angled wide of the off stump, Cameron Boyce stays deep and shuffles across off stump, looking to swing across the line but misses. The umpire has signalled OVERRATE PENALTY as the Scorchers are behind the clock. Only four fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle now.

17.3

Jhye Richardson to Hasan Ali, 1 run

ballImg133.3kph

Misses his mark this time, does Richardson. This is a high full toss on leg stump, Hasan Ali is taken aback and just swings it over the square leg region for a couple of runs.

1
17.2

Jhye Richardson to Cameron Boyce, 1 run

ballImg132.6kph

That's almost a perfect yorker from Jhye. Full and quick, lands around the base of the off stump. Cameron Boyce backs away a fair bit and jams it out past point for a single.

11:29 AM IST 6 wickets for 14 runs in the last 17 balls! Cameron Boyce walks out at number 10, replacing Luke Wood.
W
17.1

Jhye Richardson to Luke Wood, no run

ballImg114.3kph

OUT! CAUGHT! It seems like catching practice out there in the middle. Jhye Richardson strikes on the first ball of his final over and the Scorchers are just two wickets away from the win now. Richardson steams in but ends up bowling a slower ball, full and angled into middle and leg. Luke Wood stays leg side of the ball and swings across the line but does so quite early. Wood ends up just lofting it down to long on where Aaron Hardie completes the catch.

11:24 AM IST Jhye Richardson will bowl out now. 3-0-36-0 so far.

W
16.3

David Payne to Harry Manenti, no run

ballImg113.7kph

OUT! CAUGHT! This is excellent from David Payne, a great display of defensive bowling. Payne goes full and wide, angling it well across the right-hander and rolls his fingers over the ball once again. Harry Manenti sets up base deep in the crease and lifts it high towards the cover fence. The debutant, Luke Holt, settles himself just inside the ropes and pouches it with both hands. Payne gets his third wicket of the game.

1
16.2

David Payne to Luke Wood, 1 run

ballImg114.1kph

Another slower one, slightly into the pitch and Luke Wood slogs it off the inner half of the blade and wide of mid-wicket for a single.

11:21 AM IST The procession has begun. Luke Wood comes out at number 8, replacing Mackenzie Harvey.
W
16.1

David Payne to Mackenzie Harvey, no run

OUT! CAUGHT! Another one bites the dust and the Strikers are falling like a house of cards right now. David Payne just casually jogs in from over the wicket and bowls a full and wide delivery, outside off. Payne also takes pace off the ball and that does the trick for him. Mackenzie Harvey hangs back and reaches out, looking to go up and over deep point but slices it to the fielder in the deep. Finn Allen takes a safe catch and Adelaide Strikers are now 6 down for 162.

On a length, outside off, Manenti looks to run it down to deep third but the ball comes back in, cramps him for room and just goes over the stumps. Sensational over from the young fast bowler - 2 wickets and just 5 runs from it. 3-0-28-2 for Mahli Beardman so far.

11:18 AM IST Is that the end of the chase? Harry Manenti comes in at number 7, replacing Jamie Overton.
W
15.5

Mahli Beardman to Jamie Overton, no run

ballImg136.9kph

OUT! CAUGHT! Second wicket in the over for Beardman and the chase is spiralling downwards now. A quick short ball, outside off, Jamie Overton goes for the pull but is beaten by pace. Gets a top edge which goes straight up in the air. Two people get under it - short third and the keeper. In the end, the guy with the gloves, Josh Inglis, calls for it and takes it calmly. The promotion for Overton does not work as he departs for 1 (2) and from 125/1, Adelaide Strikers are now 162/5! Equation - 71 runs, 25 balls.

1
15.4

Mahli Beardman to Mackenzie Harvey, 1 run

ballImg140.3kph

A short ball, around leg stump, Mackenzie Harvey initially ducks but at the last moment, plays a no-look pull towards long leg for a single.

11:16 AM IST Well that wicket has got the Strikers really up against it now. Mackenzie Harvey walks in next, at number 6, replacing Alex Carey.
W
15.3

Mahli Beardman to Alex Carey, no run

ballImg105.5kph

OUT! CAUGHT! That's brilliantly bowled by Mahli Beardman and Alex Carey has to walk back after playing a fine knock. Beardman knows Carey is looking to use his feet on every delivery and he cleverly takes pace off the ball and bowls it full and wide outside off. Carey advances and looks to go over covers but is undone by the lack of pace and the ball dips late to catch the leading edge and lobs up in front of covers. Ashton Turner runs in and puts in the dive to take the catch and this is a massive wicket in the contest of the game as Carey departs for 71 (39).

2
15.2

Mahli Beardman to Alex Carey, 2 runs

Two more and Carey is really having to push hard at the moment. A very full ball on the pads, Alex Carey comes forward and turns it into a low full toss, hitting it well to the left of long on for a couple of runs more.

2
15.1

Mahli Beardman to Alex Carey, 2 runs

The initial call is for two and Jamie Overton makes it back safely. Full and attacking the pads, Carey shimmies to the leg side and flicks it away towards cow corner. The fielder at deep mid-wicket cuts it off to his right and keeps it down to two runs.

11:13 AM IST Adelaide Strikers need 76 runs from 30 balls. Perth Scorchers managed 66/1 in their last 5 overs. Mahli Beardman is back on. 2-0-23-0 so far.

14.3

Cooper Connolly to Liam Scott, no run

OUT! TIMBER! Liam Scott is bowled around the legs and this has been a brilliant over so far from Cooper Connolly. Connolly stays around the wicket to the right-hander and bowls a loopy delivery full and on leg stump. Scott lunges across to get inside the line and sweep but yorks himself and the ball goes on to castle into the stumps. Adelaide Strikers now need 80 off 33 balls.

DROPPED! Phenomenal effort from Cooper Connolly again. A short ball, around middle and leg, Alex Carey whips it towards deep mid-wicket. It is flat and seemingly wide of the fielder in the deep. But Connolly charges to his right, throws himself, goes with two hands and even gets to the ball. But cannot hang on. Two runs taken.

13.3

Aaron Hardie to Alex Carey, no run

Oh, Carey had to hurry there. A slower bumper from Hardie, banged in well short and angled at the batter. Alex Carey charges down the pitch but gets an underedge onto the body. Carey loses the ball for a second but it rolls back to the bowler and Carey turns back quickly, diving into the crease. Hardie has a think about throwing it at the stumps but decides against it.

No run there. Back of a length and on off, Liam Scott stands tall and pats it down to cover. The fielders inside the ring are in tight and there's no single on offer.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! That's an excellent review from Perth Scorchers and Lynn is out of here! Full, outside off, Lynn went for the drive but missed. There was a noise as the ball went past and the Scorchers appealed for the catch but the umpire stood firm. There was a bit of a chat between the players and they decided to take the review. FOUR! The attack continues. On a length, around middle and leg, Chris Lynn gets down and sweep-pulls it over square leg for a boundary!

10:51 AM IST DRINKS BREAK. Well, we don't see this too often. Trying to chase down a massive 233, the Strikers are nearly halfway there, at the halfway mark, with 9 wickets still in the bank. They did not go hammer and tongs like the Scorchers in the Powerplay, but still, have managed to be neck and neck so far. After 10 overs, Perth Scorchers were 123/2. The Strikers' previous best after the 10-over mark, in BBL, as per the on-air commentators, was 83/3! They have blown that away for sure. The Scorchers' bowling is under pressure and that big run chase against the Brisbane Heat would be hovering in their minds, where they struggled to defend 257. David Payne is back on. 1-0-11-0 so far. The POWER SURGE HAS BEEN TAKEN TOO.

OUT! CAUGHT! The 93-run stand is broken at last. A touch short, around off, Matthew Short goes for the pull and connects well too. But he has placed this straight to David Payne at deep backward square leg, who just has to leap to complete the catch. Short departs for 53 (31) and Adelaide Strikers are 93/1 after 7.5 overs, needing another 140 runs from 73 balls.

FOUR! Great effort from Cooper Connolly but gets unlucky in the end. Full and straight, Matthew Short drives it straight back down the ground. Connolly is very wide at wide long on but he charges across to his left like an athlete, dives like in a swimming pool, gets to the ball and pushes it away, while himself going beyond the ropes. Unfortunately for him, the ball goes back, only to roll back into the ropes! The stand moves to 91 (45) and SHORT GETS TO A HALF CENTURY IN 29 BALLS.
