Manohar elected as first independent chairman of ICC

India’s Shashank Manohar was elected as the first independent chairman of the International Cricket Council on Thursday.
Manohar was elected unopposed, bringing an early end to the election process that was to culminate on May 23.
The 58-year-old Manohar was previously the chairman of the ICC as a representative of the Board of Control for Cricket in India but resigned as the BCCI president this week to make himself eligible to head the ICC according to constitution amendments made last month which require that the chairman should not hold any position in a national cricket body.
“The ultimate objective is to grow our sport and engage a whole new generation of fans and I look forward to working with all stakeholders to shape the future of cricket, which has a proud history and rich tradition,” Manohar said.
Manohar, a lawyer by profession, has had two stints as the BCCI chief. He was its president from 2008-2011 and then again elected in October last year following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya.
Manohar’s two-year tenure at the helm will commence with immediate effect.
The ICC also announced that the president’s post will be abolished from next month since it is now redundant.
Retired Pakistan batsman Zaheer Abbas is the present ICC president.
