The India cricket team is on the cusp of creating history. After 12 years, the side have entered the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup. There is plenty of euphoria and excitement ahead of the clash against England at Lord’s on Sunday.
The Mithali Raj-led women’s outfit has been garnering all the limelight since their victory in the semifinals against the defending champions Australia. There has been a roaring upswing in the number of women’s cricket fans in India, especially after Harmanpreet Kaur’s record 115-ball knock of 171 runs.
The Twitter handles of the Indian women cricketers like Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, Veda Krishnamurthy, Smriti Mandhana, Sushma Verma and Jhulan Goswami have witnessed a massive increase in followers.
In Chandigarh. the cricket fans are preparing in a very ‘tasty’ way for the final between India and England at Lord’s. The Chandigarh Press Club has allocated a ‘special menu’ for Super Sunday in which various dishes have been dedicated to the Indian women cricketers’ names.
For example, the starters would have Jhulan Goswami Cheese Balls, Shikha’s Goan Fried Chicken, Sushma Stump Chopsy, Punam Raut Mumbai Chat, Square Cut Kalmi Kabab. If this is not enough, the main course would include, Lords Stadium Rice & Curry, Mithali’s Hyderabadi Biryani, Harmanpreet’s Punjabi Tadka Chicken, Smriti Marathi Dal, Veda Biryani 22-yard, Team India Rajmah Chawal, along with beverages like Poonam Yadav kadak chai, Rajeshwari Hot Coffee, Deepti Cold Coffee and Googly Mojito.
“The idea is to celebrate cricket on Sunday and provide something different to the members. The Champions Trophy final between India and Pakistan created hysteria at the club, and members enjoyed the menu that time,” said Mohammed Naeem Khan, chef at Press Club in Chandigarh, who will be preparing victory cup ice-cream along with Shahi Tukda for dessert.
Taking note of the excitement among the fans, Chandigarh Golf Range has also decided to set up a big screen in its restaurant on Sunday for the members. There will be plenty of support for Harmanpreet, who has become the toast of the nation after notching up the highest individual score by a male/female cricketer in a knock-out match of a World Cup.
Chandigarh-based cricket coach Jaswant Rai, under whom Harmanpreet made her debut in the U-19 level in Punjab, has said the advice to switch from fast bowling to batting has helped her. “She was merely a fast bowler back then. Seeing her batting talent in one of the matches, I insisted her to become a full-fledged batter. And now she is hitting massive sixes in England. I am so proud of her and the entire team. I am praying for the team and Harman’s success.”
All-rounder Harpreet Sran, under whom Harmanpreet made her debut for the Punjab senior team, is also pumped-up for the final. She said, “I had gone out to watch the India vs Pakistan clash in the Champions Trophy final. On Sunday also, a few of the women cricketers are getting together and going to watch the match at Elante Mall. We want Harman to do well and Mithali didi to lift the World Cup and make India proud.”
